08/12/26 New to Mahjong? Mahjong 101 Class!

Mahjong 101 is a beginner-friendly class designed as an introduction to American Mahjong for those who have never played before. In a relaxed and fun atmosphere, you will learn the basics of the game. The course covers tile fundamentals, game setup, how to read the NMJL card, and the steps to playing the game. No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Come join us!
 
What is Mahjong?

American Mahjong is a fun, social tile game that blends strategy, pattern-building, and a bit of luck. Usually played with four players, the objective is to form specific hands by drawing and discarding tiles throughout the game.

American Mahjong follows the rules established by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), which releases a new hand card each year.  2026 cards are now available!  American Mahjong is not only fun but also enhances memory and fosters community connections.

Event is August 12th (Wednesday) 5:30 - 8 pm at our Lake Elmo store. Class will be hosted in our adorable and cozy event or gathering space in the back.

This is an instructor-led class, taught by local Mahjong Instructor, Amy Adam.

$45 Registration Fee:  Registration fee helps cover all materials/supplies (mats, tiles, racks, 2026 card guide) along with instructor’s time.

Minimum Age to Participate: Ages 12 and up welcome. We kindly ask that younger participants are accompanied by an adult.

Handcrafted desserts by Morsels (local pastry chef) and wine provided by the only Master of Wine in the state of MN, Ashley Hausman Lohmer, owner of So What Wine or Lake Elmo favorite woman-owned, Village Wine and Spirits.

Minimum Registrations: To hold a class, we require a minimum of 8 registrations. If we cancel a class due to minimal registrations, we will contact you within 48 hours of the class and work to either reschedule or offer you a 100% refund.

Maximum Registrations: 12 is a full class. If the class is full, please email us at hello@shoplavie.co to be added to a wait list. 

Cancellation/Rescheduling Details: All sales are final.  Please note that due to the popularity of our Mahjong classes, we are unable to issue refunds or switch dates.  If you are sadly unable to attend, please help us find someone to enjoy your seat knowing Mahjong requires so many players.  If cancellation due to weather, we will reschedule.
